Stories From Field: GWB Nigeria Water Project

Investigations into groundwater potential of Eha-Amufu, southeastern Nigeria – A community in dire need of a potable water source

In 2025 GWB deployed one humanitarian water project in Eha-Amufu, a town in Enugu state, Southeastern Nigeria, to combat prevalent waterborne diseases, and help ensure equitable accessibility to water for all, by:

  1. Geophysical exploration of drillable aquifers to yield potable water 
  2. Drilling an appraisal well to ascertain the aquifer hydraulic properties and confirm its prolific nature and groundwater quality
  3. Incorporating a training scheme within the project that aims at capacity building the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s SEG student community
  4. Investigating water-borne disease prevalence and local population’s need by providing evidence to maintain sustainability by long-term funding support from local authorities and beneficiaries. 

Project by Numbers

  • Students benefiting from training: 50
  • Health benefits: 100% community members. 
  • Improved water quality for WASH purposes: 100% of community members. 
  • Travel distance reduced for potable water: 70 kms (43.4 miles). 
  • Number of geophysical approaches used: Two (Vertical Electric Sounding and Audio-frequency Magnetotellurics)

Status Update

This project started less than six months ago, and so far, the following activities have been completed: 

  • The groundwater exploration phase is 100% complete
  • 40 students from five universities received hands-on training in geophysical field data acquisition methods and actively participated in the exploration process
  • Educating the community about the importance of the project and the need for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) has been 100% completed

Water samples have been collected and are currently undergoing laboratory analyses.
