Ways to Give
Members of SEG and geoscientists around the globe should have access to innovative, state-of-the-art programs and services. The SEG Foundation is addressing these needs of geoscientists, focused on the broader geophysical community and the general public.
Ways to Give
Why should I donate to the SEG Foundation?
SEG member dues and other sources of revenue can only support incremental improvements to SEG services. Through innovative programs and ongoing support of geoscientists worldwide, your support helps the Foundation fund the big challenges and changes that keep your profession up to date.
By providing critical operational support of our programs and activities, you can make a difference that will impact thousands of lives all over the world… and even your own career!

- Bequests
Naming the SEG Foundation in your will or living trust is a popular way to support the geoscience community. A charitable bequest can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or what remains after other bequests are made. View more information on Planned Giving here. - Retirement Plan Assets
For a gift through your estate, retirement plan assets are often beneficial because they are so heavily taxed if left to heirs. Income and estate taxes can easily consume over half of the account balance at death. By naming the SEG Foundation as the remainder beneficiary of these assets, you can leave a charitable legacy. View more information on Legacy and Planned Giving here. - Life Insurance
Making a gift of an unneeded life insurance policy can be an effective way of achieving your charitable goals. When you transfer ownership of a cash value policy to the SEG Foundation, you become eligible for a charitable tax deduction based on its current value. You can name the Foundation as the beneficiary of your policy. - Royalties and Distribution Rights
The Foundation may accept gifts of royalties or distribution rights on published works (such as books or films; SEG publications; etc.).
Donor Advised Funds
Donor-advised funds (DAFs) allow an individual, family, or business to contribute assets to a fund and then recommend grants at any time to support qualified nonprofit agencies, schools, or religious organizations. They are a simple, flexible, tax-efficient, and personalized way to support charitable organizations in the U.S. or around the world.
A DAF is a philanthropic vehicle established at a public charity (i.e., Community Foundation). It allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. DAFs garner maximum tax advantages allowed by law, can be opened quickly and easily, and are incredibly streamlined to administer. For more information on opening a DAF, please contact your local public charity.
As a 501(c)(3) organization, the SEG Foundation is eligible to receive grants from donor-advised funds.
IRA Charitable Rollover
If you are 70 ½ or older, you can support the Foundation and SEG programs through a meaningful and tax-free gift directly from your traditional or Roth IRA. Use this to advance the mission of the Society and directly support our growing geophysical community.
What are the benefits?
- Up to US$100,000 may be transferred every year as a new outright gift or to satisfy an existing pledge
- Qualifies for the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)
- Such gifts are excluded from your taxable income
Contact your IRA Manager today and request a distribution be made directly to the SEG Foundation. Request that your gift be identified with your name, address, and intention to use it as an IRA rollover.
Corporate Matching Gifts
Many companies will match employee’s charitable donations or their volunteer time working with a non-profit Board or committee. Please inquire with your Human Resources office to see if your company has an employee matching program.
Development Reinvestment Fee
The Foundation must continually increase its fundraising efforts in order to expand support for current and future SEG programs. The financing of fundraising is a shared enterprise requiring a significant amount of Foundation resources for appropriate development activities and oversight. Fundraising at the Foundation includes both the direct costs of soliciting contributions, plus the costs of processing, account for, and stewarding those funds.
Therefore, a flat rate 5% Development Reinvestment Fee is assessed to all donor-restricted gifts of US$500 or more to the Foundation, both non-endowed and endowed gifts. No such fee is assessed on gifts to the Annual (Unrestricted) Fund.
