As a key advisory body to the SEG Board of Directors, the Council ensures that voices from across SEG’s worldwide membership help shape the Society’s direction, priorities, and long-term impact. Council Leadership
The Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the Society, responsible for its overall direction, operations, and fiscal stewardship.
Comprising the Executive Committee, the Chair of the Council, and Directors at Large, the Board works collaboratively to guide the Society’s strategy and ensure its continued service to the global geoscience community.

Jin and Peter assumed their leadership roles following the conclusion of SEG’s 2024 Annual Meeting and will serve until the SEG Annual Meeting in 2027.
Duties of the Chair of the Council
The Chair of the Council plays a vital leadership role within SEG:
- Serves as a full voting member of the SEG Board of Directors
- Calls and leads the Annual Meeting of the Council
- Conducts business as outlined in the SEG Bylaws and as requested by the Board
- Ensures transparent, timely communication with all Council Representatives
- Reports Council discussions, concerns, and recommendations back to the Board
- Provides written updates to the Council following each Board meeting
- Actively solicits feedback, comments, and suggestions from Council Representatives
- May call for polls or votes, ensuring adequate time for discussion beforehand
- Has the authority to establish ad hoc committees for specific needs or initiatives
- Serves on the SEG Nominating Committee

The Council is composed of Representatives from each:
- SEG Section
- Associated Society
- Technical Section
- Geographic District
Every Active SEG Member is represented on the Council through their Geographic District Representative and may also be represented by one Section, Associated Society, or Technical Section designated by the member.
