The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is a member-governed, not-for-profit organization committed to advancing the science of applied geophysics and fostering a global professional community.
SEG’s governance framework ensures transparency, accountability, and broad member participation in setting the Society’s direction and priorities.
Our leadership structure—composed of the Board of Directors, Council, Committees, and staff—works collaboratively to uphold SEG’s mission, maintain ethical standards, and steward resources responsibly in accordance with our 501(c)(3) obligations.
Governance Structure

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors serves as SEG’s primary governing body and holds fiduciary responsibility for the Society’s affairs.
The Board provides strategic oversight, approves policies and budgets, and ensures the Society operates in alignment with its mission and values. Board members are elected by SEG’s membership and serve defined terms as outlined in the SEG Bylaws.
The Board:
- Oversees SEG’s long-term strategy, policies, and financial integrity.
- Ensures compliance with all nonprofit and ethical standards.
- Meets regularly throughout the year; upcoming meetings are listed on the Board of Directors page.
- Works in partnership with SEG staff and committees to advance programs and initiatives

Council
The Council represents SEG’s membership and serves as an advisory and deliberative body on matters of strategic importance to the Society.
Council members are elected or appointed to represent SEG’s Sections, Associated Societies, Technical Sections, and Geographic Districts, ensuring diverse geographic and technical perspectives in governance.
The Council:
- Reviews and votes on proposed amendments to SEG Bylaws.
- Approves the Annual Report and changes to dues rate structure or dues beyond cumulative inflation.
- Advises the Board on programs, initiatives, and membership needs.
- Serves as a channel for communication between SEG members and leadership.

Committees and Task Forces
SEG’s Standing Committees, Ad Hoc Committees, and Task Forces play a vital role in advancing SEG’s mission through focused expertise and volunteer engagement.
Members from around the world contribute to areas such as publications, meetings, awards, education, and efforts that strengthen representation and access within the geophysical sciences.
SEG encourages broad participation: members can join most committee meetings virtually and are invited to volunteer year-round.
- Standing Committees oversee continuing functions.
- Ad Hoc Committees and Task Forces address time-limited or strategic topics.
- Committee appointments are approved by the President or Board, depending on charter.
Policies, Bylaws, and Key Documents
SEG’s governance framework is guided by a set of foundational documents and policies that define roles, responsibilities, and procedures.
