SEG/SPE Injection-Induced Seismicity Workshop

About

16–17 June 2026
Banff, Alberta, Canada

Workshop Overview

The eighth workshop in the popular injection-induced seismicity workshop series hosted by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) — with support from the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) — is scheduled for 16–17 June 2026 at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Banff, Alberta, Canada. Since the first workshop held in 2012, significant advancements have been made particularly in effective management leveraging the extensive seismic monitoring efforts as well as fundamental understanding of causal relations to both disposal wells and hydraulic fracturing operations.

This important Injection-Induced Seismicity Workshop series returns to Banff for continued discussions of state-of-the-art understanding, regulations, and management of injection-induced seismicity. With the global spread of injection-induced seismicity over the last 14 years, “best practices” have emerged including risk assessment, seismic and operational monitoring, operational protocols, and mitigation. In Banff, recent case studies associated with hydraulic fracturing, waste disposal, carbon sequestration, and geothermal systems will be highlighted. This ongoing dialogue between academics, regulators, and industry stakeholders will continue to serve as a seminal moment in understanding of induced seismicity.

This workshop will provide a venue for the dissemination of state-of-art technology and information relating to the topic of common interest. It creates an environment where operators, academia, government regulators, NGO’s, and service organizations share information freely and under a trust environment to truly progress and come to aligned understanding of the technology needs, procedures, guidelines and regulations. While there is a growing number of workshops and technical meetings on the topic of induced seismicity, over the past several years the SEG-SPE Injection-Induced Seismicity workshop series has established itself as a niche for a unique forum for the latest research developments, regulatory guidelines, and industry best.

Alex Bolton

Former Regulatory Tribunal Adjudicator

Alex Bolton is a professional geoscientist with 40 years of diverse technical and leadership experience within the energy, consulting, and government sectors. He began his career as an exploration geologist in the oil and gas industry but spent most of his career working on environmental, regulatory, and stakeholder issues associated with resource development activities.

Mr. Bolton was appointed as a board member with the Energy Resources Conservation Board in 2010 and as a hearing commissioner with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) in 2013. In 2014 he was appointed as chief hearing commissioner for the AER, a position he held until his retirement in June 2025. Mr. Bolton has considerable experience conducting fair, transparent, and independent public hearings and alternative dispute resolution on contested applications for energy projects and regulatory appeals of AER decisions. He has participated on and chaired hearing panels considering a wide range of energy activities including conventional oil and gas, pipeline, coal mining, and oil sands projects. He has participated on and chaired several joint provincial-federal environmental review panels and has significant experience considering the social, environmental, and economic effects of projects, including the effects on aboriginal treaty rights and traditional land use. Several of his hearing files involved consideration of issues related to induced seismicity.

Mr. Bolton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Sciences and a Master of Management Science degree in Management of Technology from the University of Waterloo. Since 2016 Mr. Bolton has been member of, and currently chairs, the Discipline Committee for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, conducting public hearings into allegations of unskilled or unprofessional practice by its members.
