Solomon Onwuka
Obialo Solomon Onwuka is a Professor of Geology at the Department of Geology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Nigeria. He holds a master’s and a doctoral degree in hydrogeology. He joined the university in 2004, where he teaches the environmental geology and waste management, and hydrogeology courses. Before joining the university, he worked in water drilling companies where he supervised groundwater exploration, geophysical surveys and borehole drilling.

Prof. Onwuka is a team player, evidenced by his many joint-research works in hydrogeology and environmental geology. He is the team lead of the hydrological monitoring research group at the university, and the Principal Investigator of GWB’s project titled “Investigations of the Groundwater Potential of Eha-Amufu, southeastern Nigeria”. His team is currently working on best exploration techniques for groundwater exploration in an area underlain by thick, very low-permeability rock. The team members come from two universities, UNN and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Nigeria, cuts across several specialty areas in geology, including hydrogeology, geophysics, sedimentology, engineering geology and marine geology. GWB supported a past water exploration project in NAU, which can be explored here.
In addition to potable groundwater exploration, the team also engages in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities and programs to sensitize the community towards water, food and environment management for improved healthy living, in accordance with Goal 6 (Clean water for all) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. His current GWB project has already impacted on the academic lives and career of several young university students, who have received their first ever hands-on training on geophysical equipment for groundwater exploration, and interpretation of acquired data, as well as field participation in WASH activities. There are currently about 40 student participants, made up of an equal mix of gender from geosciences, social sciences, and health/biological sciences disciplines at five universities in the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
