SEG Student Chapters

Build leadership. Expand your network. Shape your future.

SEG Student Chapters bring together university students who are interested in geophysics and related disciplines to lead, collaborate, and grow.

Through chapters, students:

  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills
  • Connect with industry professionals and faculty
  • Gain access to global SEG programs and resources
  • Host technical talks, outreach events, and networking opportunities
  • Prepare for careers in academia, industry, and government

Student Chapters are the foundation of SEG’s global student community.

Starting a chapter creates a platform for students to:

    • Build a professional network before graduation
    • Promote geophysics on campus
    • Access SEG funding and programming
    • Collaborate with chapters around the world
    • Develop leadership experience that sets you apart

Chapters serve as launchpads into deeper SEG involvement — including leadership symposiums, awards, and global engagement.

To start a new SEG Student Chapter, complete the following steps:

  1. Form a group of at least 10 students and one faculty advisor
  2. Write a petition letter to the SEG President requesting the formation of the Chapter
    • [Download sample petition letter (PDF)]
  3. Elect officers, including:
    • President
    • Vice President
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer
(Get email addresses and SEG ID numbers for the application)

  4. Prepare Chapter bylaws
  5. Complete the New SEG Student Chapter Application on the Apply page and upload your petition letter and bylaws

Once approved and chartered, your Chapter becomes an official part of the SEG community.

Eligible officers and faculty advisors may receive an invitation to apply for Emerging Nations support when funding becomes available. Invitations are sent directly to qualifying individuals and must be completed with the requested information.

  • Support is extended to officers once annually
  • Officer changes during the year do not grant membership coverage until the December elections

NOTE: The chapter needs to submit the New Student Chapter Application and be approved by the SEG Board before receiving the funding for the first year.

Once chartered, SEG provides:

  • A complimentary subscription to The Leading Edge for the Student Chapter, delivered in care of the Faculty Advisor
  • Access to SEG Branding and templates
  • Eligibility for SEG student programs and funding
  • Invitations to global leadership opportunities
  • Visibility within the SEG network
