The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is proud to announce the commencement of Arthur Cheng’s tenure as Past-President. Cheng was elected by SEG voting members in 2022 to a three-year term (2023-25) on the Board of Directors.
Cheng has been a dedicated member of the SEG community for more than four decades. He has served in numerous roles, including Editor-in-Chief for GEOPHYSICS; mentor and sponsor of the EVOLVE program; vice chair of the SEG Foundation Board of Directors; and chair of the Research Committee. He was also a co-founder of the SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation (SEAM).
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of geophysics and to SEG, Cheng was awarded the Dick Baile Exemplary Service Award by the SEG Foundation in 2024. This prestigious award honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service, accomplishment, and philanthropy. He has also been awarded the Honorary Membership and the Life Membership by the SEG.
Cheng’s extensive experience and deep commitment to the SEG community make him an invaluable asset to the organization. As Past-President, he will continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of geophysics.
About Arthur Cheng
Cheng holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics from Cornell University and an ScD in geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is an Honorary Fellow and adjunct professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a co-founder of the Sustainability Geophysics Project.
With a distinguished career spanning academia, industry, and research, Cheng has made significant contributions to the field of geophysics. His expertise and leadership will undoubtedly benefit SEG as it navigates the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition.
