The Leading Edge accepted for indexing in Web of Science Core Collection

HOUSTON, Texas — The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is pleased to announce that The Leading Edge has been accepted for indexing in the Web of Science Core Collection through the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), published by Clarivate.

Coverage begins with Volume 43, Issue 1 (2024), making all technical articles published from that issue forward discoverable through the Web of Science platform.

Acceptance into the Web of Science Core Collection follows a rigorous editorial evaluation by Clarivate, which assesses journals on criteria including editorial quality, peer-review practices, publishing ethics, and adherence to international publishing standards. Inclusion in ESCI recognizes The Leading Edge as a journal meeting these standards while expanding the visibility and accessibility of its published research to the global scientific community.

As an ESCI-indexed journal, The Leading Edge will also be eligible to receive a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) through Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The Journal Impact Factor is one of the world’s most widely recognized indicators of a journal’s scholarly influence, measuring the average number of citations received by recent articles published in the journal. Based on Clarivate’s indexing schedule, The Leading Edge is expected to receive its first Journal Impact Factor with the 2027 release of the Journal Citation Reports.

“This milestone reflects the dedication of our editors, reviewers, authors, and SEG staff to maintaining a high-quality publication that serves both the science and practice of applied geophysics,” said Steve Brown, Director of Journals for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. “Inclusion in the Web of Science Core Collection significantly increases the discoverability of our authors’ work while positioning the journal to receive its first Journal Impact Factor. We believe this achievement will make The Leading Edge an even more attractive publication venue for researchers and practitioners around the world.”

Since its founding in 1982, The Leading Edge has served as SEG’s flagship monthly periodical, publishing peer-reviewed technical articles alongside case histories, tutorials, opinion pieces, and reports on emerging technologies and professional practice. The publication is widely recognized for connecting advances in geophysics with practical applications in the energy, environmental, engineering, mining, and near-surface geophysics communities.

Inclusion in the Web of Science Core Collection enables researchers worldwide to more easily discover, search, and cite articles published in The Leading Edge. It also ensures that the journal’s citation data will contribute to the metrics reported in Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports, providing authors, institutions, and funding agencies with an additional, widely recognized measure of the journal’s scholarly impact.
