During 21-26 April 2026, SEG President, Joseph Reilly, led a delegation on a week-long visit to China’s industry and academic sectors. The delegation engaged with key enterprises, universities, and research institutions to advance global geophysical technology, talent development, and industry collaboration. Delegation members included Dr. Xuri Huang, SEG China Executive Director and the Academic Dean of School of Geoscience and Technology in Southwest Petroleum University, Prof. Xinming Wu, SEG Council Representative from the University of Science and Technology of China, Ms. Jingyu Flora Wu, SEG China General Manager, and Ms. Lv Xuling, SEG China Program Manager.

On 21 April, the SEG delegation visited BGP Inc., CNPC and had meeting with Mr. Hong Cao, BGP General Manager and related experts. Mr. Reilly acknowledged BGP’s contributions to SEG global community, the geophysical innovation, young professionals training, and SEG China’s development.

On 22 April, the tripartite meeting was held at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS), with the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS). SEG and CGS renewed the strategic cooperation MOU in the presence of Academician Qingyun Di, CGS President. Then, SEG delegation visited Deep-time Digital Earth  (DDE) Frontier Science Center at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and had a meeting with Academician Qiuming Cheng and team.

On 23 April, Mr. Reilly attended the 2026 SEG Global Board meeting and received the SEG China office 2025–2026 annual report. He thanked the board members and management for their recommendations and reaffirmed SEG’s commitment to full support and professional services for China’s geophysical community.

On 24 April, SEG delegation visited Sinopec Geophysical Research Institute Co., Ltd (SGRI). The delegation had discussions with Mr. Lixin Wang, Board Director and Deputy General Manager of SGRI and the experts team, and signed a strategic cooperation memorandum between SEG and SGRI. The SEG Southern China Section was inaugurated during the meeting, officially restarting its academic exchange programs. Mr. Benchi Chen from Science and Technology Department, Sinopec Group chaired the technical lecture delivered by Mr. Reilly.

On 25 April,  SEG delegation visited China University of Petroleum (Beijing) (CUPB), guided by Prof. Zhenhua Rui, the Dean of the School of Geophysics to tour the campus, exhibition center and labs. Mr. Reilly delivered a lecture and received positive feedback onsite. Subsequently, SEG President, Joseph Reilly and CUPB President Prof. Yan Jin reviewed the long‑term cooperation achievements and signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement.

On 26 April, the visit continued to China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) and exchanged views on geophysical applications in mining and urban near‑surface environments with Academician Suping Peng. The delegation then visited the ZHONGGUANCUN Green Mine Industry Alliance (ZGM), where discussions on international cooperation and continuing education programs were held with ZGM Secretary General Mr. Liang Wang and Ms. Qiulin Linda Shan, the Deputy Director of the International Mining Cooperation Center of ZGM.

The SEG President’s China visit deepened SEG’s cooperation with the geophysical community in China, established a closer international exchange platform, and contributed to global geophysical technology advancement, talent exchange, and sustainable industry development.
