SEG Welcomes John Eastwood as New President

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) is thrilled to announce the commencement of John Eastwood’s tenure as President. Eastwood was chosen by SEG voting members in 2023 for a three-year term (2024-26) to the Board of Directors (President-elect, President, and Past President).

A seasoned geophysicist with a distinguished career at ExxonMobil, Eastwood brings a wealth of experience and a passion for SEG’s mission. As president, he will focus on:

  • Advancing Geophysical Solutions: Promoting innovative applications of geophysics for resource and energy needs while addressing societal challenges and ensuring a sustainable future
  • Providing World-Class Resources: Delivering exceptional conventions, workshops, education, and publications to support geophysicists at all stages of their careers
  • Fostering Diversity and Inclusion: Championing diversity, equity, and inclusion within SEG and the broader geophysics community
  • Enhancing Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships with other professional societies and organizations
  • Ensuring Financial Stability: Enhancing SEG’s financial position to provide valuable services to members, sponsors, and stakeholders

Eastwood attributes his personal career success to SEG’s invaluable resources, including conferences, publications, workshops, courses, lectures, networking opportunities, and volunteer experiences. He is eager to contribute to SEG’s continued success during his term as President.

He has been an active member of SEG since 1993, serving in various leadership roles including:

  • Chair of the Development and Production Committee
  • Member and Editor of The Leading Edge Editorial Board
  • SEG Secretary-Treasurer
  • Chair of the SEG Finance Committee
  • Chair of the SEAM Board of Directors
  • Chair of the North American Regional Advisory Council

John Eastwood’s 30-year career at ExxonMobil was marked by significant contributions to the field of geophysics. He pioneered the use of active and passive seismic monitoring in oil sands, led ExxonMobil’s research and technical groups in quantitative geophysics, seismic imaging including FWI, and acquisition, and held key leadership positions in both production and exploration in Canada.

SEG is confident that Eastwood’s leadership will further strengthen the organization’s position as a global leader in applied geophysics.

Also elected to the Board of Directors were Joseph M. Reilly, President-Elect; Aria Abubakar, Second Vice President; Xiaojun Huang, Treasurer; and Directors at Large Joseph Ebeniro and Sandeep Chandola.

The following SEG members have been elected to serve as District Representatives: District 1, Sharon Teebenny; District 2, Kristie White; District 3, Janel Andersen; District 4, Steve Sloan; District 5, Carmen Dumitrescu; District 6, Itzamna Gonzalez; District 7, Phil Mollicone; District 8, Panos Doulgeris; District 9, Charles Ofoegbu; District 10, Ibrahim Attia; District 11, Jingjing Zong; and District 12, Rob Ross. District Representatives take office on 1 August 2024 and will serve until 31 July 2026.
