The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) continues to expand its global collaboration and technical exchange, most recently through SEG President-Elect Dr. Rocco “Rocky” Detomo’s visit to China from 15–21 October 2025. The visit underscored SEG’s commitment to advancing geoscience education, innovation, and partnership across borders.

Dr. Detomo’s weeklong tour included strategic meetings, keynote lectures, and academic engagements with several of China’s leading geoscience organizations, including BGP Inc., the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS), and Jilin University.

On 15–17 October, Dr. Detomo met with BGP high-level management and delivered a keynote address at the 12th BGP Technical Seminar, where he presented on “Future Challenges and Opportunities in Geosciences for the Global Oil & Gas Industry.” His presentation explored the evolving energy landscape, emphasizing the dual challenge of rising demand and rising responsibility for sustainable resource development. He highlighted innovation, data integration, and collaboration as essential drivers for future geoscientific progress.

On 18 October, he met with senior leaders of the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS) to discuss opportunities for collaboration and joint technical activities that strengthen ties between SEG and China’s growing geoscience community.

The next day, 19 October, Dr. Detomo visited BGP Borehole Geophysics in Chengdu and participated in the Annual Meeting of the Chinese Geoscience Union (CGU), engaging with researchers and students on the role of geophysics in the global energy transition.

His tour continued 20 October with a visit to the Laboratory of Smart Hydropower and River Basin Security at Tsinghua University’s Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute, exploring how applied geophysics supports sustainable water and energy management.

Concluding his visit on 21 October, Dr. Detomo delivered a lecture at Jilin University’s College of Geoexploration Science and Technology, where he met with faculty and students to discuss SEG’s international programs and the importance of cultivating multidisciplinary geoscientists for the future.

Dr. Detomo’s visit reinforced SEG’s long-standing partnerships in China and its vision to connect global expertise to local innovation. As he shared during his address, “Our greatest breakthroughs will come from working together — advancing geoscience excellence, education, and innovation across borders.”
