SEG Brings Geoscience Innovation to Brunei

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), in partnership with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd. (BSP), successfully hosted the Innovative Geoscience Across the Upstream Lifecycle Workshop in Brunei, bringing together geoscientists, engineers, researchers, students, and industry leaders from across the region to explore the technologies shaping the future of energy.

Held over two days, the workshop focused on how emerging geoscience innovations—including artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), advanced seismic imaging, and integrated digital workflows—are transforming the upstream hydrocarbon lifecycle. Sessions covered topics ranging from seismic acquisition and reservoir optimization to predictive analytics, well, reservoir and facilities management (WRFM), decommissioning, and carbon management.

The event also received regional media coverage, underscoring its significance in advancing innovation and collaboration within the energy industry. Speaking at the workshop, BSP Technical Director Mariana Omar emphasized that innovation in geoscience and digital technology is becoming increasingly critical to strengthening energy resilience, improving operational efficiency, and supporting long-term economic development. She noted that collaboration between operators, technology providers, academia, and policymakers will continue to play a vital role in addressing the evolving challenges facing the industry.

Beyond the technical presentations, the workshop created valuable opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and fostering new partnerships across academia and industry.

Participants praised the event for both its technical depth and collaborative environment.

“The three days of active engagement at the SEG Innovative Geoscience Across the Upstream Lifecycle Workshop in Brunei were highly beneficial for students, academia, industry participants, and the wider Brunei community. It provided a valuable opportunity to engage with colleagues across academia and industry and to build connections that I hope will support future collaboration in Geosciences and Geophysics, as well as related fields. I would like to thank SEG and Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd. for their support and for organising this impactful event.”

Dr. Afroz Ahmad Shah, Universiti Brunei Darussalam
