During the U.S.–Saudi Investment Forum held in Washington, D.C., the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) formalized a landmark Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in the geological sciences. The agreement, signed by SGS CEO Eng. Abdullah Al-Shamrani and SEG President Joseph Reilly in the presence of Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef and Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih, reflects a shared commitment between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States to deepen scientific collaboration and expand technical capabilities in support of global geoscience advancement.

The memorandum establishes a framework for long-term cooperation between SEG and SGS, focusing on the exchange of scientific and technical expertise and the enhancement of geophysical and geological capabilities across both organizations. The scope of collaboration includes joint work in geophysical studies and research, advanced data management technologies, and the exploration and assessment of mineral resources.

It further extends to mineral processing and mining support services, technology transfer, and the integration of geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing applications into modern geological workflows. In addition, the MoU opens pathways for developing technical and logistical services, organizing conferences and workshops, and facilitating cooperation with scientists and specialists around the world. According to SGS spokesperson Tariq bin Ali Aba Al-Khail, the partnership is designed to help both parties build stronger capabilities in areas central to geological sciences and the rapidly expanding mining sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, SEG President Joseph Reilly emphasized the significance of this international collaboration, stating, “This agreement represents a meaningful step in strengthening global cooperation in geoscience. SEG is proud to support SGS in advancing innovative geophysical technologies, expanding research, and developing the next generation of geoscience professionals. Together, we will create opportunities that accelerate scientific progress and benefit both the Kingdom and the worldwide geophysical community.” His remarks underscore SEG’s commitment not only to scientific excellence but also to supporting global partners in emerging areas such as mineral exploration, sustainable mining, technological innovation, and workforce development.

The signing of the memorandum marks a major milestone in geoscience cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the United States. By combining SGS’s strategic role as the Kingdom’s national geological authority with SEG’s global leadership in applied geophysics, the partnership establishes a powerful platform for advancing research, modernizing technical practices, and fostering international engagement.
