Joseph O. Ebeniro has been a continuous member of SEG since 1979, when he joined as a student. Following graduation with a master’s degree and PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986, he joined the faculty at the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. There, Ebeniro and his colleagues developed, for the first time, a master’s program in the department of physics. After three years, he was appointed as a research fellow at ARCO Oil and Gas Company in Plano, Texas, where he participated in amplitude versus offset analysis, large offset data analysis and multiple suppression research for two years. He later returned to the University of Port Harcourt and rose to the rank of full professor in 1995, where he continues to mentor geoscientists and supervise students at master’s and PhD levels. With the graduate students, we focused on seismic wave characterization to determine by-passed hydrocarbons in the mature fields of the Niger Delta. Another area of interest is analyzing Rayleigh wave dispersion curves to determine shallow structures of the earth to assist with efficient placement of shots for seismic acquisition. These graduates are now leaders in the industry and professors in universities. In 2015, Ebeniro was appointed as the first substantive director of the newly created Centre of Excellence in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Benin in Nigeria. There, he graduated students who were ready for the oil and gas industry. They have obtained positions in the industry without much further initial training and are doing well. Ebeniro served for over eight continuous years in the SEG membership committee and two years in Council representing District 9. He was just elected to serve in SEG Board to also represent District 9. Ebeniro retired as a university professor in 2022 and is living a comfortable life doing other things of interest, especially mentoring professionals and giving invited lectures in geophysics.
