Aria Abubakar has been a member of SEG since 1998. He has volunteered for various SEG committees, such as the Distinguished Lecture (2014–present), Publications (2021–2023), and Research (member from 2015–present; chair from 2021–2023) committees. He has also been a director of SEAM since 2018 (chair in 2024) and an associate editor for Geophysics from 2011–2023. He was vice chair of the IMAGE Technical Program Committee (TPC) in 2021 and TPC chair of IMAGE in 2022 and 2023. For his professional service, he was recognized by SEG with the 2022 Honorary Membership Award.
Abubakar is active in sharing his technical knowledge and experience. He has served as the 2014 SEG North America Honorary Lecturer and 2020 SEG/American Association of Petroleum Geologists Distinguish Lecturer. He has authored/coauthored eight books/chapters, 125 journal papers, 250 conference papers, 60 conference abstracts, and 55 patent/patent applications. For his technical contribution to geoscience, he was given the 2022 Conrad Schlumberger Award by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.
Abubakar has spent more than 20 years in academia and the energy industry as a research and development manager, scientist, and engineer. He is currently the head of geophysics technology and scientific advisor for SLB worldwide. At SLB, he has had a variety of assignments in research, hardware, and software organization. He helped SLB established the data science organization in 2017 and served as the head of the organization until early 2024. As a technical contributor in 2011, he has been recognized as scientific advisor for geophysical imaging by SLB. A common thread through most of his career is his leadership in key geoscience topics such as electromagnetics, seismic full-waveform inversion, multiphysics inversion, and machine learning.
Abubakar holds a PhD in computational science (2000) and a master’s degree in electrical engineering (1997) from Technische Universiteit Delft in The Netherlands.
