Dignity in Depth: Geophysical Search for Unmarked Burials in Historic African-American Cemeteries

This project started in April 2024 with the objective of applying near-surface geophysical methods to locate unmarked burials to help restore historic African American cemeteries (Conroe, Evergreen Negro, and Montgomery).

By integrating drone, radar, and metal detection data along with cultural indicators, the team has been able to locate sites for marking as well as outline development areas that do not show evidence of burials.

The PI involved the community associations associated to the cemeteries and provided a GWB field trip during the IMAGE ’24 in August.

The project team continues to undertake surveys at the cemeteries, develop new imaging techniques, give presentations to share their research and findings, and involve students in the work from not only geosciences but also across disciplines like anthropology.

This work is deeply important on social, historical, and spiritual grounds to preserve the legacy and dignity of these sacred places, especially those in disrepair.
