Summary

This Honorary Lecture will showcase how geophysicists are driving sustainability and making a significant impact, particularly in Latin America. Attendees will gain insights into innovative practices and initiatives shaping a sustainable future, as highlighted in the report led by the lecturer: “Geoscience in Action: Advancing Sustainable Development,” co-published by UNESCO and AGU, with 18 examples from around the world. The critical role of geoscientists in decision-making processes related to natural resource management, environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, net-zero pathways, and social consciousness will be central to the discussion.

Designed to empower and motivate, this session will provide a clearer understanding of sustainability frameworks, performance measurements, and resources for analyzing, quantifying, and communicating progress about geoscientists advancing sustainability.

Bio

Dr. Maria Angela Capello is a global leader in geoscience and sustainability, renowned for her pioneering work in aligning sustainability frameworks with geoscientific practice. As President of Red Tree Consulting LLC, she advances practical strategies for the energy sector, bridging technical excellence with long-term environmental stewardship.

Her career spans Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, where she has held leadership roles at PDVSA, PetroUCV, Halliburton, and Kuwait Oil Company. These experiences have shaped her unique perspective on energy, inclusion, and innovation across diverse cultural and operational landscapes.

A passionate advocate for equity and education, Dr. Capello co-chairs the UNECE’s Women in Resource Management and leads programs that engage students and educators in meaningful conversations about energy and geosciences into the future.

She is a Graduate Research Fellow of the University of Plymouth, an Honorary Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a Lifetime Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and serves as Ambassador and Board Liaison for the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). Dr. Capello holds a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Plymouth (UK), an M.S. in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines (USA), and a B.S. in Physics from Simón Bolívar University (Venezuela). In recognition of her global contributions, she was knighted as Cavaliere of the Order of the Star of Italy by the President of Italy.
