Summary

This Honorary Lecture will showcase how geophysicists are driving sustainability and making a significant impact, particularly in Latin America. Attendees will gain insights into innovative practices and initiatives shaping a sustainable future, as highlighted in the report led by the lecturer: “Geoscience in Action: Advancing Sustainable Development,” co-published by UNESCO and AGU, with 18 examples from around the world. The critical role of geoscientists in decision-making processes related to natural resource management, environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, net-zero pathways, and social consciousness will be central to the discussion.

Designed to empower and motivate, this session will provide a clearer understanding of sustainability frameworks, performance measurements, and resources for analyzing, quantifying, and communicating progress about geoscientists advancing sustainability.

Bio

Maria Angela Capello (MAC) is the President of Red Tree Consulting LLC and a distinguished leader in the energy sector. She spearheads initiatives in sustainability, diversity and inclusion (D&I), and geosciences. MAC has held prominent roles at Kuwait Oil Company, Halliburton, and Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). She has been honored by the Italian Government with the “Star of Italy” knighthood and by UNESCO endorsing her work leading the “Geosciences in Action – Advancing Sustainable Development”.

She is a member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Council and is the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). She is an Honorary Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International (SPE), and a Lifetime Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. MAC was recently conferred the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) Lifetime Achievement Award for Diversity and Inclusion. She is a PhD candidate in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Plymouth (UK, 2024); holds a MS in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines (USA) and is a Physicist from Simon Bolivar University (Venezuela). She is certified in sustainability and circular economy by the University of Cambridge (UK); Penn State University (USA); and the IFP (France).
