Managing Your Emotions and Wellbeing

Introduction

Did you ever feel that your emotions took you for a ride? The reality is that when we don’t manage our emotions, they will manage us. Anger may prompt us to engage in conflict while fear may cause us to avoid addressing issues that need to be resolved. Worry may increase our stress level, and self-doubt may lead to pleasing behavior at the detriment of ourselves. In this workshop we address methods to be aware of our emotions and tools to reframe emotions in a positive way.  We cover practical habits for mental hygiene, and how these habits improve the way we show up professionally and personally. These habits lead to a positive outlook, more harmonious interactions with others, and reduced stress.

Why is this course important/needed?

Many modern-day scientists and engineers are challenged by being overwhelmed by the demands made on them, by the interactions with others and the emotions that are raised by these interactions. In the good times this usually is manageable, but when encountering a challenge in personal or professional life it can be difficult to maintain productive and harmonious habits. This course provided effective methods for effective self-management.

In this short course we explore habits of thinking or modern professionals and how these habits help or restrict at work and in personal life. Specifically we focus on managing time, managing  emotions, and managing conversations. This involves introspection into our habits, and ways to realign these habits with goals that serve us. A central idea is that when we don’t manage our emotions, they will manage us. We cover practical habits for mental hygiene, and how these affect the way we show up professionally and personally. This has implications for the way we spend out time, our interactions with others, the conversations that we have, and the way we negotiate.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants can:

  • formulate a plan to use practical methods for managing emotions,
  • explain constructive techniques to ease difficult conversations and negotiations, and
  • negotiate effectively at a basic level.

Note: this course is Part 1 of Managing your time, your interactions with others, and your wellbeing.
