As the world embarks on an energy transition, we are witnessing an extraordinary surge in the mining industry. Many regions of easily accessible mineral deposits are already exhausted, leading to a trend of exploring more remote areas that are covered or less accessible. In this pursuit, geophysics emerges as a powerful tool, enabling the rapid evaluation of vast areas. It not only streamlines the search process but also helps identify the most promising sites for geochemical sampling and drilling. This innovative approach is reshaping the industry and unlocking new opportunities for discovery.
Duration
Two Days
Intended Audience
Professionals in mineral and mining
Prerequisites (Knowledge/Experience/Education Required)
Basic understanding of volcanology, tectonics, and igneous and sedimentary rock classification.
Learner Outcomes
Participants will discover how to:
- Choose the correct geophysical method for exploration
- Interpret anomalies and use those for drill-pad selection
- Map ore bodies using their geophysical response
- Integrate geophysics with geochemistry for prospecting
Course Outline
This course is conducted in a workshop format, allowing participants to learn through hands-on experience. Participants will not only be introduced to the most commonly used geophysical techniques in mineral exploration but will also engage in real-world exercises.
The course covers a variety of methods, including Airborne Gravity Gradiometry, Magnetotellurics, Electromagnetics, Magnetometric Resistivity, Induced Polarization, Gamma Ray Spectrometry, Short Wave Length Infrared, Magnetic Susceptibility, and Seismic methods. Additionally, the course provides a brief overview of different types of mineral deposits, such as pegmatites, porphyries, epithermal deposits, skarns, volcanogenic massive sulfides, orogenic gold and sediment-hosted deposits.
Case studies will be presented to illustrate how geophysics has played a critical role in discovering world-class mineral deposits.
