Critical Minerals Forum

About

27–29 October 2026
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The SEG Mining and Mineral Exploration Committee, with support from CSEG, is happy to announce the Critical Minerals Forum scheduled for 27–29 October 2026 at The University of British Columbia Alumni Center, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Objective

Explore critical mineral systems/occurrences via geophysics and geologic methodologies with a focus on imaging, integration and evaluation techniques that can be used to map, assess and ground-truth potential resources.

Description

The Critical Minerals Forum is the first event of its kind developed by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists for the mining community in North America. The SEG Mining and Mineral Exploration Committee sees this opportunity as an initial step in growing the community and learning from each other’s experience and expertise. The Forum is a steppingstone to future growth and development of the mineral exploration community at SEG.

The Critical Minerals Forum will extend understanding of critical mineral occurrences, the role geophysics has in identifying those occurrences, developing enhanced imaging for mineral identification, and engagement with geologists.

Topics will focus on critical minerals, mineral exploration, mineral systems, geophysics, geology, geochemistry, ore deposits, borehole.

Canada is a key location between mineral exploration centers in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario and is also near Alberta’s mineral rich sedimentary basins with access to oil and gas field brines that are rich in critical minerals.

Critical minerals found in Canada:

  • Lithium – found in oil and gas field brines and pegmatite
  • Helium – often found in oil and gas fields
  • Uranium – deposits are found in various geological formations
  • Potash – Found in sedimentary layers
  • Vanadium – found in primary iron deposits
  • Rare Earth Elements (REE) – found in phosphate deposits

Vancouver

Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant and multicultural population of over two million. Located on Canada’s spectacular West Coast in the province of British Columbia, and surrounded by ocean and mountains, Vancouver is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its location is accessible from around the globe, and it offers a mild temperate climate and year-round activities. Vancouver is often ranked as one of the top destinations in North America to host an international conference.

The University of British Columbia is a global centre for teaching, learning and research, and is consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world. The UBC campus is situated on Vancouver’s west side, surrounded by temperate rainforest and sandy beaches. The campus has been located on this site for most of its 100-year history, a location that is the traditional territory of the xwmə0–kwəyˇəm (Musqueam) people.

We acknowledge that UBC’s two main campuses are situated within the ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people, and in the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation and their peoples. Learn more about the Musqueam people, their culture and their history with visits to the Museum of Anthropology and the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, or a guided walking tour highlighting Indigenous art and architecture on the Vancouver campus.
