Rocky Detomo has been a member of SEG for more than 40 years and has served as member and chair of numerous SEG committees. He has uniquely served on the Board of Directors’ of SEG (2014–2016), SEG Advanced Modeling Corp. (SEAM) (2013–2014), and the SEG Foundation (2022–2025). His volunteer work among students with the initiation of SEG EVOLVE, early design of SEG’s Honorary Lecture program, and participation in mentoring has been extensive and continues to this day. He has twice served as technical program chair for SEG’s Annual Meeting (2006 and 2015) and is an active supporter of SEG’s Women’s Network and Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committees. He is an SEG Foundation Trustee Associate.
Detomo has spent more than 40 years in the energy industry working for Shell (33 years) and continues as an independent consultant and advisor. He has held senior positions in seismic acquisition, interpretation, exploration, development, and research, working and living in numerous areas around the globe. He has pioneered expert innovation in areas of direct hydrocarbon indicators, wide azimuth acquisition, subsalt imaging, time-lapse and life-of-field monitoring, and distributed acoustic sensing. Detomo has taught courses in integrated exploration evaluation, risking, and economics. He has demonstrated throughout his career the ability to deliver business value through the application of knowledge and innovative technology. Detomo is an Air Force veteran and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics including a PhD in nuclear physics from The Ohio State University.
