The SEG Student Chapter Outreach Grant supports student activities done in collaboration with an SEG Student Chapter Faculty Advisor.

SEG Chapter Outreach Grant (max $1000) Based on Available Funding per Year

The SEG Student Chapter Outreach grant provides support for student chapter projects and initiatives that make a significant impact within their surrounding community or schools (K-12 to community college level) to raise awareness of the field of geosciences.

Examples of projects include: holding workshops for teachers or community members that focus on local geoscience-based problems (e.g., sinkholes, earthquakes, landslides, water availability); providing hands-on activities for community or school events such as “science days;” supporting a summer camp for students and/or science teachers: serving as advisors for students and teachers involved in geoscience-themed science fair projects; or developing virtual geophysical field trips and data analysis activities to be shared with local high schools and community colleges. Cooperation between SEG student chapters to develop projects with a similar theme is encouraged.

The project should incorporate SEG’s mission of connecting the world of applied geophysics with others and inspiring the geophysicists of tomorrow.

  1. Project Description: Describe the community’s need for the project and how the Chapter made the decision to support the project.
  2. Objectives and Expected Outcomes: Define the project, including the target population, objectives, community benefits, methods of implementation and expected results. Please also describe the overall benefits to the Chapter, such as enhanced collegiality and collaboration. Please make sure you include the geoscience or geophysical method or approach and applicability. Also, include how you will modify the curriculum to the age of the group you will be teaching. How will you inspire the students to follow a career in geoscience and how the transfer of knowledge will occur?
  3. Budget: Define the designated budget, including:
    • Use of grant funding
    • Items that may need to be purchased
    • Receipts will need to be provided in final report
  4. Chapter Involvement: Define the personal involvement of SEG Student Chapter members.
  5. Timeline: Define the timeline for the project activities, and any plans for project support after the grant ends.
  6. Evaluation Process: Define the evaluation process. How will you measure the impact or results of your project?
  7. Project Reporting: Define the plan for reporting to SEG through the Follow-up Report, submitted at the conclusion of the project, including:
    • Financial report with receipts
    • Summary of project and results
    • Failure to report will make chapter ineligible to apply for next two years
  8. Publicity: Define the planned local and regional publicity for the project:
    • All publicity and advertising must acknowledge Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Logos are available on the SEG website under Branding Resources
    • Post activities on the SEG Students and Early Careers LinkedIn page – SEG Students or on the SEG Community student channel
