SEG|DGS Near Surface Modeling and Imaging Workshop

17-18 March 2019 | Manama, Bahrain

About

17-18 March 2019
Manama, Bahrain

Despite the technological and computational advances in geophysical imaging, near-surface geophysics continues to pose significant challenges in modeling and imaging the subsurface. Geoscientists from around the world attended the first and second editions of the ‘Near-surface Modeling & Imaging workshop’ in 2014 and 2016 to address these challenges. A broad range of near-surface disciplines were represented from academia and the industry covering aspects of engineering and hydrocarbon exploration. The previous workshops explored emerging and underdeveloped techniques including deep learning (machine learning), non-seismic methods, full-waveform inversion, and joint inversions. The need for further understanding of guided waves, anisotropy, velocity inversions, and the creation of an inclusive near-surface model was identified. The workshops also led to a greater understanding of the importance of knowledge sharing among various disciplines in the modeling and imaging of the near surface.

The objective of the upcoming 2019 workshop is to follow up on the 2014 and 2016 discussions and address persistent challenges including: insufficient acquisition design, first break picking, amplitude preservation, surface related multiples, high-resolution near-surface velocities, near-surface geological modeling, joint inversion, and maximizing the use of non-seismic data. In addition, it aims to leverage the advancements in high-performance computing while considering the elastic nature of the data.

Workshop Schedule

Sunday, 17 March
Registration, morning and afternoon sessions, icebreaker

Monday, 18 March
Morning and afternoon sessions

Who should attend?

The workshop will cover topics from geosciences, geohazards, and engineering. Publications and case studies that provide solutions and address new near-surface modeling and imaging challenges will be presented. The workshop will be of significant interest to:

  • Geoscientists
  • Engineers
  • Research institutes and academia

Workshop Format

The format of the workshop will feature presentations by invited key experts in their field who will share their experiences. The workshop will serve as a unique opportunity for open and extended discussions among the participants.

7 sessions (2 days). Keynote speakers will present. The 20-minute oral presentations will be followed by 5 minutes of Q&A. After each session, a 20-minute discussion session is planned. The objective of this session is to allow participants to discuss in detail, learn from each other what has worked effectively, and debate the issues and challenges faced during daily workflows. Session chairs will also serve as discussion leaders during the 20 minutes.
