AAA – SEG Scholarship Grants

SEG Scholarships encourage the study of geophysics and related geosciences around the world. SEG Scholarships are merit-based and range from $500 to $10,000 USD per academic year. The number of scholarships available depends chiefly upon the number of sponsors and the amounts they contribute. Funds provided may be applied to tuition, books, and other fees.

ALL – SEG/James L. Allen Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/James L. Allen Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at the University of Wyoming, or selected at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


BAH – Michael Bahorich/SEG Scholarship (Endowment)

The Michael Bahorich/SEG Scholarship endowment was established in 2008 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at the University of Missouri, Virginia Tech, or selected at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


BAR – David and Rebecca Bartel Veteran’s Scholarship (Endowment)

The David and Rebecca Bartel Veteran’s Scholarship endowment was established in 2016 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field and who are retired or honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces, the United States National Guard, the United States Coast Guard, or the United States Merchant Marine. Preference given to applicants who are medically disabled.


BAR – SEG/David Bartel Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/David Bartel Scholarship endowment was established in 2008 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the world.


BAT – Michael L. Batzle Scholarship (Endowment)

The Michael L. Batzle Scholarship endowment was established in 2015 in memory of Michael L. Batzle. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to seniors or graduate students studying at the Colorado School of Mines or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with preference given to students studying Rock Physics and/or fluids.


BLE – SEG/Norman Bleistein Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Norman Bleistein Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2022 in memory of Dr. Norman “Norm” Bleistein by Zhaobo Meng, Lihua Yang and others. This endowment is to provide academic merit-based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the world.


BUT – SEG/John R. Butler Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/John R. Butler Jr. Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics at the University of Houston, or an appropriate recipient selected at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


DEL – John D. Delbridge Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The John D. Delbridge Memorial Scholarship was established in 2011 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closey related field at any university in the world.


DGS – Dallas Geophysical Society Scholarship (Endowment)

The Dallas Geophysical Society Scholarship endowment was established in 2012 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree (major or minor) in geophysics and attending an accredited university in the North Texas area or in the state of Texas.


DGS – DGS/Karen Kellogg Shaw Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The DGS/Karen Kellogg Shaw Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Karen Kellogg Shaw. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree (major or minor) in geophysics and attending the Southern Methodist University in Dallas or an accredited university in the North Texas area or in the state of Texas.


DGS – SEG/Denver Geophysical Society Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Denver Geophysical Society Scholarship endowment was established in 1998 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students who are United States citizens, pursuing a degree (major) in geophysics or a closely related field, and attending the Colorado School of Mines or University of Colorado Boulder, unless they graduated from a Colorado high school.


DOM – SEG/Norman and Shirley Domenico Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Norman and Shirley Domenico Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field of study at any university around the world.


EQU – SEG Educational Equity Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG Educational Equity Scholarship was established in 2021 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field and who are underrepresented in their area of study or will bring diversity to their attending university. This scholarship intends to promote and increase representation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) geoscientists.


EXC – SEG/Excel Geophysical Services Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Excel Geophysical Services Scholarship endowment was established in 2001 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying exploration geophysics or other closely related fields of study at any university in the United States or Canada.


FRY – Donald and Nancy Frye Scholarship (Endowment)

The Donald and Nancy Frye Scholarship endowment was established in 2008 to provide academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the United States.


GRE – Debra and Mark Gregg Scholarship (Endowment)

The Debra and Mark Gregg Scholarship endowment was established in 2001 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field at the Colorado School of Mines, or if no applicants at that university, as determined by the Scholarship Committee.


GSA – Geophysical Society of Alaska/SEG Scholarship (Endowment)

The Geophysical Society of Alaska/SEG Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree (major or minor) in geophysics and attending an accredited university in the state of Alaska, or who is a resident of the state of Alaska.


GSH – GSH/Carlton-Farren Scholarship (Endowment)

The GSH/Carlton-Farren Scholarship endowment was established in 1998 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students who are United States citizens, pursuing a degree (major) in geophysics or a related earth science field, and attending an accredited university in the Houston area or in the state of Texas.


GSH – GSH/Hugh Hardy Scholarship (Endowment)

The GSH/Hugh Hardy Scholarship endowment was established in 2000 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students who are United States citizens, pursuing a degree (major) in geophysics or a related earth science field, and attending an accredited university in the Houston area or in the state of Texas.


GSO – Geophysical Society of Oklahoma City Scholarship (Endowment)

The Geophysical Society of Oklahoma City Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree (major or minor) in geophysics or a closely related field, and attending the University of Oklahoma or a different school in Oklahoma or the surrounding states.


GST – Geophysical Society of Tulsa/SEG Scholarship (Endowment)

The Geophysical Society of Tulsa/SEG Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree in geophysics and attending an accredited university in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, or Missouri.


HAR – SEG/James and Ruth Harrison Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/James and Ruth Harrison Scholarship endowment was established in 2000 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students majoring in the geosciences at Texas Christian University, attending a Texas school, or at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


HAV – SEG/P.C. Havens/Seismic Exchange, Inc. Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/P.C. Havens/Seismic Exchange, Inc. Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate students studying geophysics or geology at any university in the United States.


HIL – Fred and Kathi Hilterman Scholarship (Endowment)

The Fred and Kathi Hilterman Scholarship endowment was established in 1998 by S. Rutt Bridges. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the world.


JAC – SEG/Ian G. Jack Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Ian G. Jack Scholarship endowment was established in 2001 to provide academic merit based scholarships to graduate students majoring in exploration geophysics or a closely related field at the Heriot-Watt University.


KEG – KEGS Ontario Scholarship (Endowment)

The KEGS Ontario Scholarship endowment was established in 1998 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students in their final year of honor’s undergraduate program or first year of a Master’s program, majoring in Mineral Exploration Geophysics and attending an accredited university in Ontario, Canada.


KEG – KEGS/Phillip Hallof Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The KEGS/Phillip Hallof Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 1998 to provide academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in Mineral Exploration Geophysics and attending an accredited university in Canada (or a Canadian citizen attending any university in the world).


LAC – SEG/Lucien LaCoste Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Lucien LaCoste Scholarship endowment was established in 1997 in memory of Lucien LaCoste. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to graduate students whose primary research has a specialization in Potential Fields instrumentation or data analysis.


LAM – SEG/David R. Lammlein Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/David R. Lammlein Scholarship endowment was established in 2005 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students majoring in the geosciences at any United States university, or at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


LAT – SEG/Latin American and Caribbean Scholarships

The SEG/Latin American and Caribbean Scholarship was established to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in Latin America or the Caribbean.


LUM – David E. Lumley Scholarship (Endowment)

The David E. Lumley Scholarship in Energy & Environmental Science endowment was established in 2008 to provide academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in science or engineering and who demonstrates excellence in the combined areas of both energy and environmental geoscience.


MAZ – SEG/Thomas A. Mazza Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Thomas A. Mazza Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2001 by Scott Tinker and others. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to graduate students pursuing a degree in Interpretation or Reflection Seismic Data at a university in the United States.


MCB – SEG/Barbara McBride Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Barbara McBride Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2000 by ExxonMobil Corporation and others. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to female students with a declared major in Exploration Geophysics or a closely related field.


MIT – Billy F. Mitcham Sr. Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The Billy F. Mitcham, Sr. Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2010 by the Mitcham Family and Mitcham Industries. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to United States citizens pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field.


MIT – Billy F. Mitcham, Jr. Scholarship (Endowment)

The Billy F. Mitcham, Jr. Scholarship endowment was established in 2015 in memory of Billy F. Mitcham, Jr. by the Mitcham Family and Mitcham Industries. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to United States citizens pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field.


NAB – Misac Nabighian Scholarship (Endowment)

The Misac Nabighian Scholarship endowment was established in 2018 to provide academic merit based scholarships with a preference to students studying electromagnetic, gravity, and magnetic methods at any university in the world.


PEA – SEG/Henry Bates Peacock Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Henry Bates Peacock Scholarship endowment was established in 2008 by Elwin M. Peacock and Robert B. Peacock. Additional contributions have been made in memory of Elwin M. Peacock. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a career in petroleum geophysics and associated sciences at teh University of Iowa, University of Colorado at Boulder, or at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.


POP – Alexander Mihai and Catherine Ann Popovici Scholarship (Endowment)

The Alexander Mihai and Catherine Ann Popovici Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field, at any university in the world.


ROB – Enders Robinson Scholarship (Endowment)

The Enders Robinson Scholarship endowment was established in 2014 to provide academic merit based scholarships to a junior or senior student pursuing a degree (major or minor) in geophysics at an accredited university.


ROB – James D. and Stella M. Robertson Scholarship (Endowment)

The James D. and Stella M. Robertson Scholarship endowment was established in 2013 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the world.


SAB – SEG/Brian Sabin Scholarship (Endowed)

The SEG/Brian Sabin Scholarship endowment was created in 2022 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics at the Brigham Young University, or if no qualified applicants from that university, award is to be determined by the Scholarship Committee.


SER – SEG/Gary and Lorene Servos Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Gary and Lorene Servos Scholarship endowment was established in 2005 to provide academic merit based scholarships (or study grants) to junior, senior, or graduate level students studying applied groundwater exploration at a university anywhere in the world.


SHE – Robert E. and Margaret S. Sheriff Scholarship (Endowment)

The Robert E. and Margaret S. Sheriff Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to non-US resident students studying geophysics in their first or second year at the University of Houston.


SMI – Charlie and Jean Smith Scholarship (Endowment)

The Charlie and Jean Smith Scholarship endowment was established in 1999 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field, while attending the University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M University, or Stanford University.


SPR – Michael T. Spradley Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The Michael T. Spradley Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2011 by John P. Stein, Trent Spradley, and others. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field at a university anywhere in the world.


THO – Leon and Pat Thomsen/SEG Scholarship (Endowment)

The Leon and Pat Thomsen/SEG Scholarship endowment was established in 2004 to provide two annual academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field; one at a university in North America, and the second at the Heriot-Watt University.


THR – SEG/Jack and Catherine Threet Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/Jack and Catherine Threet Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or a closely related field at any university in the world.


WHI – J.E. White Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The J.E. White Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2003 in memory of J.E. (Ed) White by the White Family and others. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to students studying geophysics or physics at the Colorado School of Mines.


WOR – SEG/David W. Worthington Scholarship (Endowment)

The SEG/David W. Worthington Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 to provide academic merit based scholarships to graduate students studying geophysics at Virginia Tech University, or if no qualified applicants, to a graduate student in the geosciences as determined by the Scholarship Committee.


WTO – W&T Offshore/Jerome F. “Jere” Freel Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)

The W&T Offshore/Jerome F. “Jere” Freel Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 2019 by Tracy Krohn. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in geophysics or a closely related field at a university anywhere in the world.


ZON – Kenneth L. Zonge Scholarship (Endowment)

The Kenneth L. Zonge Scholarship endowment was established in 2007 by the family of Dr. Kenneth L. Zonge. This endowment provides academic merit based scholarships to graduate students studying exploration geophysics or geological engineering and related fields at any university in the world.

Scholarships

What’s the difference between an endowment and a non-endowed gift?


Endowment
Funds are to be invested and the earnings are to be spent according to the board designated annual spending rate.

Non-Endowed
Funds are to be used for operating and programmatic expenditures and are received with the intent of being spent within twelve to twenty-four months of receipt.

Development Reinvestiment Fee


In accordance with SEG Foundation policy, a Development Reinvestment Fee of 5% is assessed on donations of $500 or more to a restricted fund. This fee is used to support Foundation expenses associated with donor stewardship and fundraising. The entire donated amount, including the Development Reinvestment Fee, is considered a charitable donation to the SEG Foundation. Thank you!
