Mediterranean Gas Exploration Symposium

28–30 April 2025
New Cairo, Egypt

Velocity model building plays a vital role in seismic data imaging, being a key factor in exploring the subsurface. Accurate velocity models are essential for meeting the demands of exploration effectively. There is a growing necessity to examine complex geological structures within difficult datasets, emphasizing the crucial significance of detailed velocity models. This workshop focuses on understanding the core principles, limitations, and challenges associated with seismic velocity estimations in practical applications. By examining the relationships between refraction, reflection, surface waves, and non-seismic data, participants will gain valuable insights into the underlying assumptions that simplify wave propagation. Achieving accurate velocities remains a significant challenge in enhancing seismic data quality and depth prediction. Notably, precise velocity models are crucial for imaging the deep subsurface, considering the impact of near-surface irregularities. Additionally, high-resolution velocities are necessary for wave-equation based migration algorithms, full waveform inversion as well as resolving near-surface complexities.

Tailored for geoscientists, the upcoming workshop aims to deepen their understanding of current and emerging technologies involved in velocity model building. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of contemporary velocity estimation methods, including the approximations involved in obtaining computationally feasible solutions.
