The main objectives of a successful E&P company is to increase its hydrocarbon reserves. Companies usually achieve this objective either through organic growth within its exploration concessions, application of new technology to enhance field production or inorganic growth through acquisition and purchase of producing assets with proven reserves. A sustainable upstream business generally requires a portfolio that supports a targeted reservoir levels of production, development and exploration licenses. Companies must assess those potential resources before pursuing the opportunity. Understanding the petroleum agreement with the host country or the Sale and Purchase Agreement with the partners is the key element to guarantee a profitable transaction. Companies would also need to assess, and rank the different risks and uncertainties of this opportunity to ensure a successful venture.

- Technical and non- technical risks, and uncertainties
