Hi, I'm Glenn Winters, the 2019 SEG General Chairman for the SEG Convention in San Antonio, Texas, September 15th through the 20th.
I spent a majority of my career acquiring, processing, and interpreting data from the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford. While there are many topics that we are currently working on for SEG19, a significant focus will be on the Permian, the Eagle Ford, and Latin America. SEG19 will be multidisciplinary and integrated, featuring the latest hottest advances in data acquisition, the importance of artificial intelligence, and big data, such as the very hot technology of sparse 3D land seismic data acquisition.
Today on the outskirts of Midland, Texas in a planned community that has office buildings, single family homes, multi-family homes, schools, and oil wells, they're all co-existing in a safe and healthy environment. Since 2015, close to 19,000 wells have been drilled in the Permian Basin, and also the Eagle Ford, where almost 7,000 horizontal wells have been drilled in this time frame.
Operators, using tools such as 3D seismic, microseismic monitoring, inversion, and fluid flow monitoring, create a better understanding of the reservoir that results in finding the best combination of stacked lateral targets and spacing to determine the best economic development of a reservoir.
We're outside of Midland at a test site for the seismic field crew where they do testing before we go out into the field. There are over 12,000 square miles of 3D seismic that has been shot in the Permian Basin since 2015. Of that, 8,300 square miles were done in Texas. Today's channel count for our seismic crews has gone from 3,000 back in 2010 to over 15,000 to 17,000 today. This allows us to acquire 3D seismic much more rapidly. A 50-square mile survey that was shot back in 2010 would take us 50 days. Today, we can do it in less than 17, and that's because of lighter wireless equipment and less vibrator time.
Not only are we planning to have a wonderful technical session, we also have lots of great tourist attractions in San Antonio, including things like the River Walk, the Alamo, Six Flags, and Sea World, and we're looking forward to having a hot time in San Antonio.
