2nd EAGE/SEG Workshop on Geophysical Aspects of Smart Cities

6–8 December 2022 | Hong Kong

About

Workshop Details

Cities around the world, and especially in Asia, strive to transform urban work and life, utilizing the ongoing digital revolution. Challenges to embrace digital transformation, however, are significant. With limited land, innovations are required continuously to improve the urban living environment for a safer, more sustainable, and more liveable conditions. The limited space also challenges the urban transportation designers to provide more efficient, more reliable, and enhanced solutions. In both domains, geophysics has the ability to provide essential knowledge at the planning stage, real-time performance monitoring, and life cycle management. Bridging the gap between geophysics, civil engineering, and digital informatics provides the framework to guide project owners and local authorities to develop specific strategies for building a Smart City/ Smart Nation.

The goal of this workshop is to influence the smart city practice in the highly developed cities in Asia and around the world. After a first successful edition in Singapore in 2019, we are now taking the event to Hong Kong. The main aim of the workshop is to demonstrate and discuss lessons learned and progress in geophysical techniques in smart city applications and methods, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary efforts with civil engineering and digital technologies. Hardware sensor development, remote sensing application, data analytics, and social and environmental impacts of technologies will be covered.

Layout of Abstract

Titles should be short (max. 120 characters) and relevant. Abstracts must be in English, original and not have appeared in any other publication.

The body of the abstract needs to be one to two (1-2) full pages in length, paper size A4. Longer or shorter sized abstracts will not be included in the review process and therefore be rejected. The abstract should consist of text and appropriate figures supporting the key message.

Please do not use more than 1 column for text, do not frame the text, and please upload the body of your abstract as one document with embedded figures.

A good abstract set in the template consists of an introduction, the main description of theory or method broken down as appropriate and illustrated with figures, conclusions, optional acknowledgements and references. It should reflect work that is actually completed at the time of submission and not plans or ideas that are still taking shape in the mind of the author or research that is still highly immature.

The abstract must concentrate in itself the essential information of the presentation: purpose, methods, results and conclusions. It should be an abbreviated, informative, accurate representation of the presentation and not a mere recital of the subjects to be covered.

Template Usage

The lay-out of the references should be consistent with the style guide for references in the First Break guidance for authors. Please ensure every citation has a reference and vice versa.

Number the figures sequentially, according to their appearance in the text, and check that each figure is cited in the text.

Supply a short caption for each figure; more detailed discussion of the figure can be reserved for the text. Further information about the use of figure captions and figure numbering can be found in the First Break guidance for authors.

Abstract Submission

The body of the abstract must be uploaded using the template and uploaded in PDF. Please make sure the PDF file is not protected. Please make sure you named the uploaded abstract in this order: Topic Number, First and Last Name, Organisation/ Affiliation.

After submission, and up to the close of the Call for Abstracts on 31 May 2022, 23.59 hrs (GMT +8), you will be able to edit your submission (please login to your account, then go to your Dashboard and select the abstract in the Submissions submenu).

Anti-Plagiarism Statement

SEG and EAGE invites the presentation of new and original material in a range of multi-disciplinary topics in geoscience and engineering. SEG and EAGE take plagiarism very seriously. Therefore, if an abstract or paper, after careful review, examination and consideration, is rejected on the basis of plagiarism, ALL authors of the abstract/paper will be denied the opportunity for further abstract submissions for the following three years. Note that this means that NO abstracts/papers from ANY of the authors (as author or co-author on subsequent papers) will be accepted for ANY SEG or EAGE event (Annual Meeting or Workshop) for a period of three years starting on the date of the event for which the paper was originally submitted.

Cancellation Information

In case authors want to withdraw their abstracts, please let us know before 14 June 2022.

Please note that late withdrawals may be considered as a no-show and you risk being disqualified from presenting at all EAGE events for the next 3 years.

If the presentation has not been given on-site, the related abstract will be removed, before or after the event. Therefore, both withdrawn presentations and ‘no-shows’ will be removed!

Please note: EAGE cannot be held liable for any loss, damage, direct, indirect or consequential damage as a result of withdrawal, removal or non-removal of the abstract in any way.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee will consider all abstracts submitted to the EAGE Head Office by 31 May 2022, 23:59 hrs (GMT +8) and authors will be notified by end of June. The technical programme selection meeting has then taken place and the technical programme with definite session titles and presentation allocation is composed.

Each abstract will be reviewed by at least 2 referees prior to the technical programme selection meeting. The selection process is no formality, on average 1 out of every 4 submitted abstracts is rejected!

The abstracts must be relevant to one of the conference topics. Authors are strongly requested to indicate the topic under which their abstract should be evaluated by the referees. Authors should also indicate their preference for either an oral or a poster presentation; certain material is more suitable for poster presentations, due to the details that need to be studied and discussed in more depth.

Oral and poster presentations are treated equally.

Please note that late withdrawals may be considered as a no-show and you risk being disqualified from presenting at all EAGE events for the next three years.
