The journal, published quarterly in print and online, aims to accelerate innovation in interpretation for resource exploration, exploitation, and environmental stewardship. Interpretation is jointly published by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).

According to the Science Edition of Clarivate Analytics' InCites Journal Citation Reports, the journal's 2018 impact factor is 1.172. This is the journal's fourth year of inclusion.
