SEAM Phase II Project Manager Michael Oristaglio

Michael Oristaglio, a geophysicist, is a senior research scientist in the Yale University Department of Geology & Geophysics and the Yale Climate & Energy Institute.

He spent much of his career with oilfield services company Schlumberger, which he joined in 1982 as a research scientist, working on problems of seismic imaging and electrical well logging. From 1988 to 1990, he managed application development for the first Schlumberger reservoir management software system. From 1990 to 1998, he was director of research in electromagnetics, and in 1998 became Director of Research Technical Communities for Schlumberger Oilfield Services.

From 2000 to 2004, he was chief scientist and then president of Witten Technologies, a small company that developed the first imaging ground-penetrating radar for mapping utility infrastructure. He returned to Schlumberger in 2005 to manage the company's research innovation fund and retired in 2009 to take up the position at Yale. He has published over 60 articles on geophysical modeling and remote sensing, holds a dozen patents, and is the author of A Sixth Sense (Overlook Press, 2009), a biography of one of the founders of Schlumberger.

Dr Oristaglio has B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology & geophysics from Yale University (1974) and a D.Phil. in geophysics from Oxford University (1978). He is a member of several professional societies, including SEG, EAGE, AAPG, AGU, AAAS, and the New York Academy of Sciences.
