About

21–23 Nov 2021
Abu Dhabi, UAE/Virtual

This will be a hybrid event with an in-person and online technical program. View the respective programs under important documents.

In this workshop we will showcase state-of-the-art workflows and recent innovations in geological, geomechanical, and petrophysical interpretation of geophysical data. It will highlight the increasing role of seismic interpretation not only as a platform for integration of all subsurface information in the oil and gas industry, but also as a tool for bridging new trends in energy transition. The workshop will be an excellent opportunity to review and discuss recent advances in interpretation methodologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantitative tools, new challenges, and other ways to apply innovative techniques to both the legacy and latest generation of geophysical data.

As the seismic interpreter accesses ever-increasing volumes of data, the requirement for technology-led solutions becomes critical. The machine learning evolution continues to move beyond the hype and provides additional tools to the interpreter seeking to quantify subsurface risk and reduce uncertainty. How can our scientists capitalise on the advantages machine learning brings, and how do we understand the biases and limitations of the technology to prevent overreliance?

Guillaume Cambois, ADNOC (Expert Geophysicist)

The tasks that Oil Companies consider core business and those they can delegate to Contractors have changed over time. Interpretation, whether structural or quantitative, has historically been where the line was drawn, but is this sustainable in our changing industry? Oil Companies bear the ultimate responsibility for drilling, but can they afford full-time highly specialized stochastic inversion experts? How can Seismic Contractors demonstrate the value of their new technologies without being involved in interpretation? With the industry moving toward the multi-client model shouldn’t interpretation become the next natural deliverable? How would this affect the Middle East? Or will this entire debate become moot once AI takes over most interpretative tasks?
