R. Malcolm Lansley retired in 2015 from his position as Vice President of Geophysics for Sercel, Inc. in Houston. He remains active in the industry as a consulting geophysicist advising on 3D seismic survey design for all operational areas both onshore, offshore and in the transition zone. He also continues to teach courses for the SEG and other companies on a variety of subjects from basic geophysics, 3D survey design and acquisition, data processing and vibrator theory and usage.  He received a B.Sc./A.R.C.S. in Physics/Mathematics/Geophysics from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London in 1969. After graduation, he commenced employment with Geophysical Service, Inc. in Croydon, England, processing seismic data from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Although he began his career in data processing, he soon realised it was important to ensure that the data acquisition and processing were fully integrated. Thus, he accepted a more senior role coordinating survey design and seismic field operations with the data processing and the ensuing interpretation. During his career, he has been employed in senior geophysical advisory positions with GSI, Halliburton Geophysical Services, Western Geophysical, PGS and Sercel. In these positions he advised on the data collection methods and selection of equipment, their impact on data processing and the interpretability of the resultant data.

Malcolm has authored more than 70 papers on seismic exploration, data processing and interpretation. He also has been granted several US and Canadian patents related to 3D survey design and evaluation thereof, and to the reduction of source-surface ghosting effects in marine source arrays. His research interests include 3D technology (both land and marine), marine data acquisition, wavelet processing, multicomponent recording and vibrator theory and usage. He is a member of the SEG, EAGE, and the Geophysical Society of Houston.
