Karst Geophysics and Geology Field Trip:
Barton Springs Fault/Swimming Pool and Antioch Cave in Austin, TX

First trip site is Barton Springs which is a major discharge site for the Barton Springs Segment of the karstic Edwards Aquifer and is located in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The Main Barton Springs discharges into the Barton Springs pool from the Barton Springs Fault. We have extensive geophysical data across the Barton Spring fault and the Main Barton Barton Springs that characterize the fault and the conduit that feed the Main Springs. We will discuss and outline the main features of the fault and the karstic conduit.

The second trip site is the Antioch Cave, which is located in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer and in the vicinity of Antioch Cave, which is located within Onion Creek and near the town of Buda. Antioch Cave is the largest capacity recharge feature within the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer. A recharge enhancement structure has been constructed over the cave. We have done some geophysical work to understand better the geometry of the geologic units in the recharge zone and faulting, and we will discuss the main findings of the geophysical study in the Cave area.

Franklin Houser, a former San Antonio Attorney, purchased the house and 103 acres in the 1970s as a get-away for him and his family. He found enjoyment in learning about grapes which grew into a passion of making wine. It all started with "Bonnie’s Vineyard" in 1992. In just a few short years he opened the tasting room and produced the first wine in 1998.

Tour will be departing from the Grand Hyatt.
