Establishing Earthquake Monitoring in Timor-Leste

Our primary effort is to develop an accurate earthquake catalog that can be used to assess seismic hazard and characterize architecture of the fault system in Timor-Leste.

We propose to build this capacity over the upcoming two years and establish independent capability with local scientists so that they can take over the monitoring efforts in a permanent role.

Statement of Work

Our primary effort is to develop an accurate earthquake catalog that can be used to assess seismic hazard and characterize architecture of the fault system in Timor-Leste. We propose to build this capacity over the upcoming two years and establish independent capability with local scientists so that they can take over the monitoring efforts in a permanent role. The eight instruments owned by USC that are temporarily deployed in Timor-Leste generate data records that can be used for accurate location of earthquake hypocenters and determination of local and regional subsurface geological structures, both of which are valuable for understanding seismic hazard. We propose to install two more seismometers that will be purchased with the funds from a GWB grant and leave them permanently in Timor-Leste. Using the data from the temporary instruments and the newly acquired permanent ones, we can integrate them to create an earthquake catalog for both local and regional events. Completion of an earthquake catalog for Timor-Leste will allow for consideration of seismic hazard through knowledge of the present state of tectonic stress in the country.
